Elizabeth Pickard
Yesterday I told you a little about how I choose character names, so I thought I'd share with you how the main female protagonist in Denim and Diamonds got her name.
I knew from the first time I sat down to write the story that her name would be Elizabeth. I did no plotting whatsoever on Denim & Diamonds, just sat down and wrote. Elizabeth was the name that my muse whispered in my ear. At first, I was sure she would be Elizabeth through the whole story, but I was wrong. She was - is - Beth. Her mother calls her Elizabeth, but her mother is formal about everything. And the family's last name, Pickard, is a nod to Star Trek: The Next Generation. I've been a Star Trek fan since I was about 11 years old when I used to stay up late to watch Star Trek on Saturday nights (10:35 pm on Channel 13). My favorite series is Star Trek: The Next Generation, so I borrowed a name from there. I hope Jean-Luc doesn't mind. Patrick Stewart and Gene Roddenberry (RIP), too, for that matter!
By the way - an interesting bit of trivia about Patrick Stewart : Did you know that during the first season of ST:TNG, he was so sure he was going to be fired that he didn't unpack his bags for a month and a half? Ah, Patrick . . . have a little confidence in yourself!

I was searching "Patrick Stewart" on Google to see what blogs were saying about him, and I came across this page of your blog. That is an interesting little fact about him - his fear of being fired from TNG. I didn't know that. I am also a fan of TNG - think it was the best of the Star Trek series. However, I'm disappointed with the films that were done with the TNG cast - they were, for the most part, dumbed-down action movies.
