The Importance of Turtles
I have always been intrigued by the occult, the paranormal and fringe ideas. Sometimes I think that I should investigate the Wiccan religion because I think Wiccan practitioners are more in tune to nature and the environment, in much the same way that native Americans are. Anyway - this has been on my mind because twice in the past week I have had dreams about turtles. That got me to thinking that perhaps my subconscious (or the Universe) is trying to tell me something. I've always enjoyed turtles. Had a couple little water turtles as pets when I was a kid. Dribble was my first (I was in the 4th grade, had a pesky little brother and enjoyed Judy Blume books - what else would I name my pet turtle?), and Sunshine was my second. Sunshine was pretty cool. I even entered him in a pet show and took second place, which was pretty cool, too. But I haven't thought about turtles lately, or been affected by turtles, so why am I suddenly dreaming about turtles? After a weekend of reflection (or drug induced napping . . . I have a horrible cold), I have decided that the dream turtles do mean something.
Are you ready?
Slow and steady.
That's right. I WANT success in writing to come right now. The sooner the better. Yesterday, as a matter of fact!
But, regardless of what I want and how quickly I want it, the reality is that I have a paying job, every day, that requires about 10 hours of my day. And I am a wife and mother, which also requires time every day (although my hubby and daughter do unfortunately get shorted in the time area. Quality, right?). And that leaves me fitting in writing wherever I can. It may just be in small increments, but it is daily and it is improving. My critique group has helped immensely with my production and the quality of my writing. Granted, I don't have five chapters to give them every other week (usually more like one or two), but slow and steady, I'm getting it done. My stories are getting written. My characters are being developed. My plots are evolving.
So, I am going to adopt the turtle as my totem. And every time I look at a turtle I will be reminded that success comes to those who are patient, who keep plodding along, day by day, progressing towards the goal in spite of the distractions that try to lure us from the side of the road, in spite of the hills and valleys . . . I will succeed.
Oh, and if you would like to read more about lessons from turtles, there is a fun blog about online business from a "turtle dad".

The turtle sounds like a good totem! (You must have read the "Clan of the Cave Bear" series, too! LOL But you're right--slow and steady wins the race!
