Creativity Breeds Creativity
I have been writing much more lately. For some reason, my characters are really talking to me. I've been in edit/rewrite mode, which is very difficult for me (so I tend not to do it . . . ). This is the hard part of writing. This isn't glamorous or exciting. The newness of the story is gone. This is where the work gets done - the work that means the difference between dreaming of being a writer and being a writer. And in the midst of this creativity, something has happened. My dreams are becoming more vivid. I wake up thinking about how I can incorporate the characters and feelings of my dreams into my story. The funny thing is, this has happened before. It happens every November when I am deep into speed-writing my novel. Which got me to thinking about how creativity breed creativity. Sometimes I feel as though my imagination has left me - especially when I read my fellow critiquer's sci fi story that amazes me with her visions of another world. I can't seem to think of an original thought for the life of me. But I push through and keep writing/editting/rewriting. And what happens? I dream creatively! I have improved my creative though process, nourished my inner artist, and she has rewarded me with dreams that I can use. My imagination hasn't left me, it has simply been pushed down by the realities of life, the drudgery of working for a living. But if I cultivate that part of my brain where creativity lives, it will thrive, grow and break through the surface.
I know. Sounds corny to me, too. But it's true. Creativity breeds creativity. So if you want to live a more creative life, start acting like a creative person. As The Happiness Project blogger says, fake it til you make it!
