Why Do I Write?
This is a topic I've discussed previously, but since Moe has encouraged me to touch on the subject again . . . I thought it might be worth revisiting. Then I'll go back and see what I've said previously. I can't help but wonder if I've grown and matured as a Writer.
So . . Why do I write? I write because I want recognition. I write because I feel that I have a God-given talent for writing, and I think that by writing I am honoring that talent (and the giver of that talent). The fact that I write because I want recognition is definitely a new idea for me. I always thought writing was simply something I did. But when I released Denim & Diamonds, I loved the attention. It made me realize that it was incredibly fulfilling to have people recognize me, and to recognize my talent. I have never thought of myself as liking attention, but I liked that attention. It was exciting, and addictive. I certainly want to feel that again, bigger and better.
But attention and recognition (fame?) isn't everything. I also write because I have stories to tell. I have characters running around in my head, and by writing about them, I give them life. I allow my fantasies to live on the page. I will never solve a crime, but my heroine can. I will never get to own a horse ranch, but my character can. And I will never live the high-flying life of a celebrity, but I can write about it. Writing is an escape, much as reading is. It gets me away from the humdrum life of a working mom. (don't get me wrong - I love my life, it just isn't very exciting).
